About RHS
We are one of the many record keepers who tell our shared story.
Renton Historical Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of over 45,000 of Renton’s most precious artifacts. Our collection consists of a wide variety of objects including photos, books, textiles, and machinery. Each item within the collection captures a glimpse into the lives of those who shaped the history of Renton. People whose footprints define the path we walk today.
Founded by local teachers and librarians with the goal of preserving Renton’s history, RHS began operations by organizing small exhibits at local libraries. In 1979, RHS and the City of Renton partnered on the development of the Renton History Museum, located in Historic Fire Station #1.
Renton Historical Society has grown significantly over the years, and is the culmination of the work of the volunteers, staff and community members who were foundational to the organization’s success. This non-profit is the beneficiary of an endowment valued at approximately $6 million dollars, and the owner of a building in downtown Renton where artifacts are stored.
Today, RHS is working toward a separation with the City of Renton to create two independent historical organizations. We are committed to increasing accessibility to the artifacts through free remote public access, and are seeking additional space to store artifacts and host exhibits.
